Why A Community?

I wanted today to revisit the idea of community. I really think this is a major issue that we are facing in our society today. All too often, we fail to recognize the importance of face-to-face interaction with other people. This is not just an issue outside the home either. Knowing that the average amount of television watched a day is 4 hr and 45 minutes tells me that we are not getting much face time with our family either. Then throw in video games and forget about it. When do we have time to interact with people face-to-face? When do we have time to build deep, meaningful relationships?

Merriam-Webster's online dictionary defines community as a unified body of individuals; an interacting population of various kinds of individuals (as species) in a common location.

I see hundreds of children everyday that are starving for attention. Starving for someone to look in their eyes and listen to them. Someone to put their arm around them and say, "I love you!" Someone to read a book to them. Someone who just plain pays attention to them. They seek that attention by acting out, by going into a shell, or seeking physical interaction. This is how our seeking to escape our lives through entertainment is affecting the lives of the next generation. We can change this though. All we have to do is turn the TV off more, turn the video games off more and focus on others more. Just think how reading a book to a child, giving someone a hug, listening to someone share their life with you, or being their for someone in need could affect their life and yours. May you be encouraged today to interact with one more person than you normally do today. God bless!
